Some of my ideas for paintings are taken from real things or events that have some kind of resonance. For a while fences, railings, posts, linear constructions and boundary markers in the landscape had particular power for me.
These constructions mark boundaries and delineate spaces. They also punctuate the horizon and visual field, providing landmarks and route markers.
Enclosed and tangled in these visual concerns are echoes of other meanings. Some are to do with how the fabricated world collides or impacts on the landscape. Some are to do with human concerns and conflicts. Concerns such as those of enclosure and captivity, of safety V imprisonment. About how barriers are created by that which keeps the things we value safe. The ‘things’ can be in the material world or in the metaphysical world of ideas and feeling.
