andrew munozThe discursive elements of the work are based on my fascination of fear and desire and how it is projected onto our imagination through narratives; and to this extent I am interested in the nature and function of folklore and mythology. Notions such as Good and Evil, the Grotesque and the Beautiful, Tragedy and Comedy are all present. Ideas surrounding the ‘outsider’ and the ‘spectacular’ also play an important part in the ‘narratives’ depicted in my paintings. The figurative elements of the paintings are based on childhood memories or children’s literature. Current work is also influenced by the ideas of Benjamin, Nietzche, the writing of Kafka, and the photography of Arbus and Mikhailov. background Born London 1967: Art education: Plymouth College of Art 1995-6: Falmouth College of Art 1997- 2000 Solo exhibitions: Lane gallery, Plymouth (2000) Group exhibitions: 20/21 British art fair, Royal College of Art, London, (2001), ART2002, London (2002), Flying Colours Gallery, London, (2002), AAF, Commonwealth Centre, London, (2003), SWA Phoenix Arts Centre Exeter, (2004), South West Academy, Royal Albert Museum, Exeter, (2005), Sefton Open, Atkinson gallery, Liverpool, (2005), 'Encore@ RWA Bristol, (2006), ‘Hide and Seek’ Mivart Studios, Bristol, (2006). contact email: munozandrew@hotmail.com Website: www.andrewmunoz.co.uk |
