Nicky Cornwell

I have always acknowledged a strong connection to the natural world and the delights of discovery that it offers. As a visual artist this emotional connection has informed my work and presently is concentrated on two elements. The first is a fascination for plants. The second is the knowledge that I have the desire and freedom to create something where there was nothing before. I want to address my association with the one by exploring the possibilities offered by the other.

I value this urge to invent and the plant world provides the perfect arena in which I can allow my imagination to perform. I want to imitate their seemingly endless capacity for invention and display. By way of painting and drawing on translucent papers and, more recently, modeling in wax, I try to access what could be, by beginning to work with no agenda in mind. Form always suggest itself, but I then have the capability to pour light onto it or bring darkness, add and take away what I will, teasing something brand new into existence. It seems a haphazard method but it is a thrilling power and it pleases me as a process of discovery as much as invention.
